Watzke Demands Infantino Resign as FIFA President

Hans-Joachim Watzke, the DFB vice-president, has called on Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA president.

"He must go. No ifs, no buts," Watzke said.

He set out three main points of criticism against the Swiss official: the award of the FIFA Peace Prize to US President Donald Trump, the lifting of the ban that had kept American forward Folarin Balogun out of the World Cup, and a plan to sell World Cup broadcast rights to private investors from Trump's circle.

Watzke called the broadcast-rights plan "complete madness" and added: "Nobody knew anything about it. His vice-presidents at FIFA didn't know, the FIFA Council didn't know. What do you need investors for? You don't need them at all. FIFA is sitting on a huge pile of money that actually belongs to us — the national football associations."
