Bayern Munich confident of Harry Kane contract extension

Bayern Munich expect Harry Kane's contract situation to be resolved once the international break ends. Chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen said talks, ongoing since August, should conclude, with Bundesliga action not resuming until the weekend of 9 October.

"We're having productive discussions," Dreesen said ahead of Bayern's customary visit to the Oktoberfest on Sunday. "Harry will now take the time – those three weeks – and then things should start to wrap up."

Kane is in the final 12 months of the four-year deal he signed on leaving Tottenham in the summer of 2023. Bayern president Herbert Hainer went further, telling Bild the club fully expect an extension to be signed. "He knows very well what he has in Bayern," Hainer said. "And of course, we know what we have in him. We want to extend his contract further, and I also think that's what will happen." A deal running through either 2029 or 2030 is understood to be under discussion.

The 33-year-old has given Bayern little reason to let him leave. He became the fastest player to reach 100 Bundesliga goals when he scored twice in the 7-0 win over Union Berlin, and now has 101 goals in 98 league appearances, plus 53 in 56 outings in other competitions. He has won two Bundesliga titles, and two Franz Beckenbauer Supercups since arriving, and is the only player to finish as the division's top scorer in each of his first three seasons in Germany.

Manchester United are nonetheless tracking the situation. Should Kane fail to agree fresh terms, he would be free to leave Bayern for nothing next summer, and United are considered leading candidates among a group of clubs, including Barcelona, ready to move for a player tipped to return to England before retirement in pursuit of Alan Shearer's Premier League scoring record. Sources close to the striker say he remains keen to stay in Munich, though several details are still to be settled.

Kane's form has also put him among the frontrunners for the 2026 Ballon d'Or after 73 competitive goals last season, a position Bayern sporting director Max Eberl has publicly backed him for. He has consistently declined to campaign for the award himself, a contrast with Barcelona's Lamine Yamal, who has argued the prize should go to "the best player in the world."

If Bayern's confidence proves well founded, the contract question that has shadowed Kane's season should be settled before he returns to competitive action in October. Failure to agree terms would instead open the door to the kind of move to Manchester United that has circled his career since he left Tottenham.
