Mbappé: Mother Wanted Liverpool Move Over PSG

Kylian Mbappé has confirmed he came close to joining Liverpool in 2017, saying his mother wanted him to sign for Jürgen Klopp's side rather than Paris Saint-Germain.

The forward, then 18 and playing for Monaco, met Klopp in secret on a private jet over the south of France that summer. His mother and agent, Fayza Lamari, was in the room. She had already travelled to Anfield alone to watch matches and gauge the atmosphere before deciding whether to back the move.

Mbappé chose PSG instead, telling The Athletic he wanted to play for his home city before establishing himself elsewhere. Klopp had given his own account of the jet meeting earlier this year, in an interview with German broadcaster Magenta TV.

Mbappé left Monaco, where he broke through as a teenager, for PSG that year and has since moved on to Real Madrid.
