Mourinho avoids sanction over Madrid derby remarks
AESAF and the CTA's legal department decided not to refer Mourinho's post-derby comments about the officials to the Disciplinary Committee, sparing him a possible ban.
Jose Mourinho will not face a disciplinary complaint over his remarks about the officials in Sunday's Madrid derby. AESAF, the referees' union, and the legal department of the Technical Committee of Referees spent Monday weighing whether to refer his comments to the federation's Disciplinary Committee, and decided against it.
Had the complaint gone ahead, Mourinho could have faced a four-match ban and a fine of between 601 and 3,005.06 euros.
Atletico won the derby 2-1 at the Metropolitano on Sunday, and Mourinho used his post-match remarks to go after the officials rather than his side's performance. He questioned the credentials of referee Miguel Angel Ortiz Arias, noting the 41-year-old is not an international referee and had never taken charge of a match of that stature. He was sharper still on VAR official Daniel Trujillo Suarez, invoking incidents involving Real Madrid from last season, and said Atletico's Romero and Lee Kang-in should both have been sent off.
The defeat has already cost Real Madrid more than a result. Federico Valverde suffered a serious left ankle injury after a Lee Kang-in tackle during the match and is expected to miss two to three weeks.
With the complaint dropped, Mourinho keeps his place on the touchline without an immediate threat of suspension, though the derby defeat and Valverde's absence leave him with more pressing problems than the referee.
