Rexach says referees have always favoured Real Madrid

Former Barcelona player and coach Carles Rexach says officials historically helped Real Madrid and that VAR has not fixed the problems of the past.

Carles Rexach, the former Barcelona player and coach, has said referees have historically favoured Real Madrid, and that VAR has not changed it.

He made the comments on the programme El cafè d'idees on the radio station 2Cat, after Real Madrid players complained about officiating.

"In the days when I played, we lost all the time."

"I thought the VAR system, which I originally approved of very much, because you can't award a goal if the ball has not crossed the line, but previously it couldn't be disallowed, would be an advantage," Rexach said. "But if there used to be problems with the referee and the linesmen, now they have stayed the same, plus the VAR officials. We have not made much progress, the problems remain."

Barcelona lead La Liga with 7 wins from 7 matches. Real Madrid, the reigning champions, host Getafe in the next round.
