Wolfsburg and Christian Eriksen have agreed to terminate the midfielder's contract at his request. The 34-year-old has not played for the club since he collapsed during Denmark's friendly against Ukraine in June.
Eriksen joined on a free transfer last September on a two-year deal. He made 34 appearances in 2025/26, scoring 3 goals and providing 9 assists, but could not prevent Wolfsburg's relegation to the Bundesliga 2. Neither the club nor the player has said whether he intends to play again.
Dieter Hecking, the club's managing director for sport, said the decision was Eriksen's to make.
"For us, it was clear that it was up to Christian to make a decision about his future," Hecking said. "We wanted to give him that freedom in what is a unique situation, and have now granted his request to terminate his contract. Despite his short tenure, he left a lasting impression on his team-mates, the staff and the fans."
Eriksen wrote in a social media post that his priority was his family. "For me, it's important to be close to my family in Denmark at the moment," he said. "My time in Wolfsburg was full of ups and downs, but I know the club is in good hands to make its way back to the Bundesliga."
If Eriksen does return to football, this makes him a free agent and the time to choose his own path. For Wolfsburg, the release removes a player who was unavailable for the start of a season in the second tier.
