Monchi apologises to Espanyol fans over Lamine Yamal Ballon d'Or pick

Monchi has apologised to Espanyol supporters after naming Barcelona's Lamine Yamal as his preferred candidate for the Ballon d'Or, a choice that did not sit well with sections of the "perico" fanbase given the rivalry between the two Catalan clubs.

The Espanyol sporting director was asked at the presentation of the fifth Reyes Cup in Seville to pick between Yamal, Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane., and repeated the view later that day on Cadena SER's "El Larguero" when Manu Carreño put the question to him again.

"Me han preguntado y he creado un poco de polémica entre los aficionados 'pericos'. Al que se haya molestado, le pido disculpas. Me han dicho Mbappé, francés, Harry Kane, inglés o Lamine Yamal, español, y he tirado por la parte española. Evidentemente, como 'perico' tenía que haber dicho cualquier otro."

Monchi said the answer carried no ill intent. "No le hice con ningún tipo de maldad. Sé lo que significa el sentimiento 'perico', me he identificado desde el primer día, lo he sentido en la calle. Si a alguien le ha molestado, le pido disculpas porque ha sido un poco poniéndome la bandera española."

At the Reyes Cup event he had explained the reasoning behind the pick. "Es complicado. Creo que hay una terna de cuatro jugadores que optan a ello. Si tiro por ser español, tiro por que lo merecería Lamine. Pero imagino que los franceses pensarán que lo merece Mbappé y los ingleses que lo merece Harry Kane. No es una edición fácil y va a generar controversias."

Espanyol, where Monchi now works as sporting director after leaving Sevilla, are 15th in La Liga on 7 points from seven games, with Roberto Fernández Jaén their top scorer on 8.

Monchi also spoke about settling into the role, splitting his time between San Fernando and Barcelona. "Estoy bien, contento. Me han acogido de una manera extraordinaria. Con ganas de tener algunos puntos más, que nos faltan." He described the club's new ownership as working on short, medium and long-term plans.

He paid tribute separately to José Antonio Reyes, patron of the tournament being presented, a former Espanyol player among his many clubs. "El talento surge a través del trabajo, pero talento como el de José Antonio, que no hace falta trabajarlo, es muy difícil encontrarlo. Era muy innato."
