Alfredo José Morelos Aviléz

He came through the academy at Independiente Medellín and made his first-team debut in July 2014, but it was the move to HJK Helsinki, first on loan and then permanently, that turned him into a scorer worth watching: 46 goals in 62 games, a league title, a domestic cup and the Veikkausliiga's top-striker award.

That record took him to Rangers FC in 2017 for £1 million. The numbers held: few strikers in the division matched his consistency in front of goal.

Colombia called him in for the senior side between 2018 and 2021, 11 caps and a single goal — and his best moment in national colours came off the bench of history rather than the scoresheet: a bronze medal at the 2021 Copa América. Years earlier, as a teenager, he had already gone close to a trophy with the under-20s, reaching the final of the South American U-20 Championship in 2015.

The Rangers years ended in 2023, and a move to Brazil's Santos did not produce the same spark. A loan back to Colombia, to Atlético Nacional, changed that. Since arriving, Morelos has scored 23 goals in 68 appearances and helped the club to the Liga BetPlay title, two Copa BetPlay wins and the Superliga — a homecoming that has, so far, worked out better than the spell in Brazil that preceded it.
