Deportivo Cali let Alejandro Villarreal go to Santos without a transfer fee, keeping only a 10 percent economic stake in the player. He had come through the Cali academy, and the move to Santos in 2024 marked his first step outside Colombia. He made his debut only in August that year, coming off the bench against Avaí in a match Santos lost 1-0.

Santos won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B that same year, and Villarreal was part of the squad, though he did not play in the matches that decided the title. A loan to Argentina's Aldosivi followed in mid-2025, arranged to run until January 2027. He debuted for the club in August 2025, in a goalless draw with Belgrano, and wore the number 30 shirt. Over his time in the Liga Profesional he made nine appearances in the 2026 season without scoring or assisting, picking up a single yellow card, plus two appearances the previous year and one in the Copa Argentina.

In July 2026, before the loan spell in Argentina had run its course, Caracas FC in Venezuela agreed a three-season loan for the forward, extending his stay abroad through to the end of 2028. The financial terms of that move were not disclosed.

At youth level, Villarreal represented Colombia's under-20 side, making six appearances in 2025 without finding the net. He has not featured for the senior national team.
