About

Primera División serves as the top tier of professional football in Venezuela. Operating under the branded name Liga FUTVE, the competition sits directly above the Segunda División and below no other domestic league structure. The professional era officially began on February 21, 1957, when the Venezuelan Football Federation launched the *Primera División Profesional* alongside the Instituto Nacional de Deportes. While the first official championship occurred in 1921, this modern iteration defines the current landscape of Venezuelan football.

The season structure differs significantly from most South American counterparts due to its irregular calendar and dual-tournament format. Each year is split into two separate tournaments: the Apertura (Opening) and the Clausura (Closing). Both stages feature a single round-robin phase involving all 14 clubs before advancing to the *Cuadrangulares* (quadrangular semifinals). This knockout stage divides the top eight teams from each tournament into two groups of four, featuring home-and-away mini round-robins. Winners of each group meet in a single-match final to decide the tournament champion.

Historically, winners of the Apertura and Clausura contested a *Final Absoluta* to crown the absolute national champion. Although a single aggregate table frequently determined continental qualification and relegation since 2020, a grand final format returned in 2025. Promotion and relegation rules remain strict. The two teams finishing lowest in the aggregate table face automatic relegation to the Segunda División. Conversely, only the champion of the second tier secures a place in the top flight, avoiding the complex multi-stage playoffs found in neighbouring leagues.

Caracas FC holds the record for the most titles in the professional era with 12, followed closely by Deportivo Táchira with 10. The league distinguishes itself in the region for having the lowest percentage of foreign players in South America. University-affiliated clubs also play a notable role, with Universidad Central de Venezuela claiming the title in the 2025 season.
