A Uruguayan coach, José "Pocho" Gill, looked at a side playing in blue and white in January 1975 and told them to change. Yellow and black, he argued — the colours of Peñarol, and a better fit for the state of Táchira. The club has worn vertical yellow-and-black stripes ever since, and the nickname Aurinegro , outlasted everyone who chose it.

The club itself grew out of San Cristóbal, where an Italian, Gaetano Greco, put it together on 11 January 1974. It began as San Cristóbal Fútbol Club and only took the name of the state in 1978, by which time it was a year away from its first national title.

What sets Deportivo Táchira apart in Venezuela is less the count of championships — 11, more than anyone — than the fact that it has never gone down. Since 1975 no season has ended with the club leaving the top flight, and no other Venezuelan side can say the same. That continuity is why it sits top of the all-time league table, and why it has appeared in the Copa Libertadores 25 times, again a national record. The best of those runs came in 2004, when the team reached the quarter-finals without losing a match.

The titles have arrived in clusters — the early 1980s, the turn of the century, back-to-back seasons in the 2010s, then 2021, 2023 and 2024 — with two Copa Venezuela wins, in 1982 and 1983, filling the gap between the first two.

The rivalry that defines it is regional before it is sporting.
