The club was founded in 1972.

The season that travelled furthest was 1977. Portuguesa reached the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores, the first Venezuelan club to get that far, in the middle of a stretch of six consecutive appearances in the competition from 1974. Venezuelan clubs had until then gone to the Libertadores and come back early; Portuguesa did not travel to make up the numbers. Eight entries in the tournament stand in the club's record, and the great majority of them fall inside that one decade.

Home is the Estadio General José Antonio Páez, known locally as El Mítico, a ground rebuilt in 2007 and again in 2011 and holding around 18,000. The name attached itself during the years when the ground was hosting Libertadores nights.

After 1978 the club finished second in 1980 and again in 1983, and the titles stopped. The five stars from the 1970s remain the whole of the league record, and the task in Acarigua is the same one it has been for decades now: getting back to the level the ground was named for.
