About the player
Christopher McVey's move to San Diego FC came through an unusual route: rather than negotiating directly, the club paid D.C. United to exercise a right of first refusal in December, then extended his contract through 2027, with an option for 2028, seven months later.
McVey joined IF Elfsborg's academy at 12, having started out at Sparsörs AIK near Borås. He worked his way into the first team and stayed through 2021, a period broken by a loan at Dalkurd FF and capped by a runners-up medal in the Allsvenskan in 2020. A move to Inter Miami CF in January 2022 took him into MLS, where he won the Carolina Challenge Cup that year and the Leagues Cup in 2023. D.C. United brought him in during February 2024, using an international roster slot and allocation money to complete the deal; San Diego FC then paid $50,000 in guaranteed allocation money, with more available if conditions are met, to sign him that December.
At San Diego, McVey has established himself as a regular starter, making 32 appearances and scoring twice by October 2025. He received a sending-off against Atlanta United and an own goal against CF Montréal, following a one-match suspension he served at D.C. United in October 2024 for a rough challenge on a Nashville SC player.
Eligible for both Sweden and the United States, McVey has represented Sweden only at youth level, up to Under-19.
