About the player
In January 2023, Diego Luis González Alcaráz became the first Paraguayan to move from Mexico's second tier straight to Serie A. Lazio took him on loan from Celaya with an obligation to buy.
The path there had been unusually scattered. He came through Paraguayan youth football at Acosta Ñu, Colonos Unidos, Oleariense, Olimpia and Nacional, joined Olimpia's academy in November 2017, then played for Libertad's youth team until 2020. His first professional contract was in Panama, with Potros del Este, where he made 13 appearances and scored three goals in 2021. A loan spell at Universidad San Martín in Peru brought three matches and nothing else.
Celaya, in the Liga de Expansión, is where he was noticed: 33 matches and five goals across Clausura and Apertura 2022. His market value at the point of the Lazio move was put at around €1 million.
Atlas took him on loan from 30 December 2024. Across 2024/25 and the start of the following season he made 32 appearances and scored six goals, and he played in the 2025 Leagues Cup. In January 2026 Atlas bought him outright for €1.2 million.
He has two caps for Paraguay's senior side. At under-20 level he made 11 appearances and scored four goals, including against Peru and Ecuador at the 2023 South American Championship. He was named in Paraguay's squad for the 2024 Olympics in Paris but did not get on the pitch.
