Damián Ariel Fernández

Football at Vélez Sarsfield never involved a scouting search for Damián Fernández — the club had already coached him through its youth ranks, having taken him in from Defensores de la Ribera in 2015. He worked his way to the first team and made his debut in August 2019, coming on as a second-half substitute against Estudiantes. Over the following seasons he established himself in the Vélez back line, appearing regularly in the league, in the Copa Argentina and the Copa de la Liga, and taking the field four times in the 2025 Copa Libertadores.

One goal stands out among his contributions: in December 2024 he scored against Huracán in a match that helped Vélez secure the championship title that season. It gave the defender, more accustomed to blocking attacks than finishing them, a share of a title-winning moment.

In 2025, after six years at Vélez, Fernández moved to Defensa y Justicia, signing a contract that runs through the end of 2029. The transfer closed a chapter that had begun with his boyhood move into the Vélez academy and opened a new one at a club he now represents.

His performances did not go unnoticed at national team level. Argentina's under-20 setup called him into a preliminary squad in 2020, when he also took part in the Cotif tournament in L'Alcúdia, Spain. Four years later, in June 2024, he earned a cap for the under-23 side, starting in a 2-0 friendly win over Paraguay played in preparation for the Paris Olympics.
