About the player
A loan to Cerro Largo in 2013 gave him regular football, and he returned two goals from twelve matches there. The move that shaped his career came in 2014, when he joined Racing Club de Montevideo and turned himself into a reliable scorer, finishing with fifteen goals in 49 games.
That form earned him a switch to Peñarol in January 2018. It was the most productive spell of his career in Uruguay: 40 appearances and 17 goals, alongside a league title and the Uruguayan Super Cup that same year. At Juárez he found them, scoring 12 goals in 47 appearances.
He returned to Mexican football on a permanent basis with UNAM Pumas in July 2023, adding seven goals in 20 matches before Cruz Azul brought him in. Fernández has made 64 appearances and 22 goals for the club. The move has also brought silverware: a Mexican league title in the Clausura, the Campeón de Campeones, and the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
