Jessie Fleming

The Tokyo Olympic final against Sweden was level when Jessie Fleming put Canada ahead from the penalty spot in normal time. She later took her country's first kick in the shootout and scored that too.

She started at Nor'West Optimist SC at the age of three and was in the senior national team by September 2013, debuting at the Torneio Internacional Cidade de São Paulo aged 15 years and 278 days — the second-youngest player in the team's history. The following year she was named Canadian youth player of the year at under-17 level, having already taken the Golden Ball at the 2013 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship.

Four seasons at UCLA followed, from 2016 to 2019: 75 appearances, 25 goals, MVP of the 2017 NCAA playoffs and selections in NCAA and Pac-12 teams of the season. In the summer of 2020 she signed her first professional contract, with Chelsea .

Her move to Portland Thorns in January 2024 was reported by The Daily Telegraph and CBC at £250,000, around $320,000, which those outlets described as a significant fee; the club itself announced an undisclosed sum.

In February 2024, after Christine Sinclair retired, Fleming was appointed captain of Canada. By the end of that year she had 157 caps and 20 goals, with bronze from Rio 2016, appearances at Paris 2024, and World Cups in 2015, 2019 and 2023 — she was named player of the match.
