About the player
On 20 March 2026, with Portland Thorns two goals down to Seattle Reign, Marie Lena Müller came on in the 67th minute, and her side went on to win the match.
The injury that kept her out had come on 19 February 2025: a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee. It cost her the whole of the 2025 season. Five days after the substitute appearance against Seattle, on 25 March 2026, she started against San Diego Wave. On 29 April she scored her first goal in the NWSL.
Müller came through VfL Bochum before moving into the SC Freiburg system, and made her Frauen-Bundesliga debut on 25 March 2017 at the age of 17. She played seven matches for the reserve side in the Regionalliga from 2018, scoring twice, and built up 97 league appearances and nine goals for the first team — 112 games in all competitions, with 14 goals and eight assists. In 2022/23 Freiburg reached the DFB-Pokal final, losing 4–1 to VfL Wolfsburg; the run took the club into the Champions League group stage for the first time in its history, and Müller played in that campaign.
Portland signed her on 2 February 2024, with the fee undisclosed. Her contract, originally running to the end of 2025, was extended on 24 June 2025 through the 2026 season with an option for 2027.
With Germany's youth teams she won the UEFA Women's Under-17 Championship in 2016, and made 11 appearances at U17 level, 21 at U19 and four at U23. She debuted for the senior side on 5 June 2026 and scored in that match.
