About the player
Mitja Ilenič scored the equaliser for New York City FC against Inter Miami in February 2025.
The Slovenian came through the academy sides of NK Bela Krajina and NŠ Bela Krajina before Domžale took him on in 2019. He made his first-team debut there in May 2021 and went on to make 32 league appearances and score three goals, prompting New York City FC to pay €1 million for him in January 2023 on a deal running to 2026 with an option for a further year.
In New York he made 64 league appearances and scored three goals, the first of them against FC Cincinnati in August 2023 in a 3-2 win. His most decisive moment came in the play-offs: in the round of 16 in November 2024, again against Cincinnati, he took and scored the winning kick in a 6-5 penalty shootout to send his side through.
He has won one cap for Slovenia's senior side, in 2024.
Since January 2026 he has been on loan at Raków Częstochowa, with an option to buy written into the deal, and has appeared in the Europa Conference League for the Polish club. He has made five appearances in all competitions for Raków so far, without scoring.
