About the player
Octavian Popescu took his first steps in football at a school in Nucet, in Dâmbovița county, before joining the youth ranks at Regal Sport București, where he progressed through the academy from 2014. Loan spells followed at both Rapid București and Universitatea Craiova as he continued his development away from the first team.
His move to FCSB in August 2020 was meant to include a step down first: the club had lined up a loan to Turris Turnu Măgurele in Liga II before Popescu had even made his debut in the first-team shirt. FCSB's leadership scrapped that plan, choosing instead to keep him. He made his debut for the club on 20 September 2020. The fee paid to Regal Sport has never been made public, and reports at the time linked his representation to a relative of FCSB president Gigi Becali.
Since then, Popescu has passed 180 league appearances and more than 20 league goals for the club, with his overall tally across all competitions higher still. None of the moves materialised, and Popescu has remained at FCSB throughout.
