Óscar Romero

Óscar Romero left Botafogo in 2025 with a suspension on his record. He had joined the club on a free transfer in March 2024 and was part of the squad that won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and the Copa Libertadores that year. In May 2024 he was removed from the travelling party for a Copa Libertadores tie against Universitario in Peru, after taking unauthorised women to the team hotel in Fortaleza. He was fined and suspended, and stayed at the club to the end of the season.

The road there began at Cerro Porteño, where he came through the youth ranks and made 90 league appearances, scoring 13 goals. He won the Paraguayan Primera División in the 2012 Apertura and the 2013 Clausura before Racing Club paid around €2.7 million for him in January 2015. Two years and 47 league matches later, Shanghai Shenhua spent a reported €8 million on him. His Chinese spell brought the 2019 Chinese FA Cup and overlapped with a loan at Deportivo Alavés, 18 league games in La Liga.

Free transfers have carried him since: San Lorenzo, then Boca Juniors in February 2022, where he collected the Primera División, the Copa de la Liga Profesional and the Supercopa Argentina in a single year. A short stay at Pendikspor in Turkey brought 3 goals in 12 matches. He came to Huracán in February 2026 on a deal to the end of that year, and by mid-season had 2 goals in 12 league appearances.

For Paraguay he has 55 caps and 4 goals, with four Copa América tournaments behind him — including 2015, where Paraguay finished fourth. His twin brother Ángel is also a Paraguay international.
