About the player
Simon Sandberg grew up playing two sports at once — he won two Swedish championships with Sävehof before football won out. He came through Björndammens BK and had a trial at Hammarby that did not lead to a contract, then lifted the Juniorallsvenskan title at 17.
Sandberg turned professional with Häcken in 2012. In the 2015/16 Swedish Cup final against Malmö, he converted the winning penalty. Levski Sofia paid roughly two million Swedish kronor for him in the summer of 2016. Injuries limited him to five appearances, and the deal was cancelled by mutual consent in November 2017.
He earned his first senior cap on 12 January 2020, in a 1-0 win over Kosovo.
