About the player
Thiago Cardozo came through the youth ranks at Peñarol and made his first-team debut on 5 May 2018. He was handed the captaincy in 2022-23, a spell that also brought the Torneo Apertura title in 2023, adding to a Uruguayan Super Cup won in 2018. A loan spell at Deportivo Maldonado in 2021 brought ten appearances away from Peñarol.
His move away from Uruguay came in stages. Unión de Santa Fe took him on loan in 2024, then made the transfer permanent on 13 January 2025. On 11 July 2025 he joined Belgrano de Córdoba, again on loan, wearing the number 25 shirt.
In 2026 he was first-choice goalkeeper and captain as the club won the Torneo Apertura, beating River Plate 3-2 in the final. His contract with Belgrano runs to 31 December 2026, and the club is weighing whether to exercise an option to sign him permanently.
Cardozo's international experience is limited to Uruguay's youth sides. He made six appearances between the under-17 and under-20 teams, featuring at the 2013 Under-17 World Cup and the 2015 South American Under-20 Championship, but has not been called up to the senior national team.
