About the player
Verena Hanshaw was named in the UEFA Women's Euro 2017 "Eleven of the Tournament" after Austria reached the semi-finals. She played at Euro 2022 as well, and she is now one of the most-capped players in Austria's history, with 131 appearances and 10 goals as of June 2026.
Her first goal for the national team came against Denmark in 2012. By then she had already left Vienna, where she came through the youth ranks at SC Groß-Enzersdorf, SV Essling and FC Stadlau. She played a season for USC Landhaus Wien before moving to Germany, first to Herforder SV and then to BV Cloppenburg. With Cloppenburg she won the 2. Frauen-Bundesliga in 2012–13. Spells at SC Freiburg and SC Sand followed.
The longest stretch of her club career was at Frankfurt. She joined 1. FFC Frankfurt in 2018, stayed as the club became Eintracht Frankfurt, and left in 2024 after 114 appearances.
She then went to Italy and played 10 times for AS Roma in 2024–25, a season in which the club won the Supercoppa Italiana. She moved to England to join West Ham United in January 2025. In July 2026 she came back to Austria to sign for FK Austria Wien.
