7th Wave

Zavolzhye, in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, has a professional football team because a club from somewhere else bought its way in. In 2024 Volna, also written 7th Wave, took over the licence of Elektron, a Veliky Novgorod side that had gone bankrupt. It moved its base to the town and began playing at the Zavolzhye FOK sports complex.

Volna had not started out there. Local entrepreneur Alexey Kozyrev set it up in 2016 in the settlement of Kovernino, and for the first few years it played in regional amateur competitions. It finished second in the Nizhny Novgorod Region Championship in 2018 and third in the Povolzhye Third Division a year later.

The step up came in 2020/21, when Volna entered the professional Second League. With no ground of its own at that level, it borrowed the Lokomotiv stadium in Nizhny Novgorod. Valentin Paltsev, a local player, made his professional debut for the club in 2020. In the 2021/22 season Volna reached the last 64 of the Cup of Russia. After that season it dropped out of the professional league and went back to regional football.

The return came through the Elektron licence. Volna now plays in Group 4 of Second League Division B, and in 2024 it won the second round of that division. It also went through to the fourth round of the Cup of Russia in 2025/26. Its supporters call the side "the White-Blues", after its blue and white colours.

The fixtures that matter most are against Khimik Dzerzhinsk and Pari Nizhny Novgorod-2. Both clubs are from the same region, and matches with them are known as the Nizhny Novgorod Derby.
