Álftanes

Álftanes sits on a small peninsula outside Reykjavík, and its football team began as one section of a wider community society, Ungmennafélag Álftaness, set up in the years after the war to give the settlement's youth somewhere to play. The society formed on 6 January 1946, and the football side has run under its umbrella ever since, never growing into a standalone professional outfit.

For most of its history, that has meant staying close to home, both geographically and competitively. The club plays out of OnePlus-völlurinn, also known as Bessastaðavöllur, a ground that holds around 1,000 people — a size that fits a peninsula of a few thousand residents rather than a city club. Matches against KFG, the club from neighbouring Garðabær, carry the closest thing Álftanes has to a derby, with local bragging rights at stake each time the two sides meet. Grotta, Kári and Kría turn up regularly too, in cup rounds and lower-division fixtures, though none of those meetings has taken on the same edge.

Silverware has come, but from the foot of the pyramid rather than its top. Álftanes won the 4. deild karla in 2014, then a decade later took the 5. deild karla in 2024 — titles that mark progress through Iceland's lower divisions rather than any run at the top flight. The club also serves as a feeder side, an "uppeldisfélag," for Stjarnan, sending players up the pyramid before they are old enough to be widely known.

No player developed at Álftanes has gone on to wear Iceland's national shirt, and the club has never lifted a cup or reached the country's higher divisions. For a team still built around its home peninsula, that remains the gap between what it has done and what it has yet to do.
