In 2009, Selfoss won the second-tier title and were promoted to Úrvalsdeild, Iceland's top flight, for the first time. It had taken until 1955 for Ungmennafélag Selfoss — founded in 1936 as Ungmennafélagið Tíbrá before taking the town's name a year later — to set up a football department at all, and until 1966 for that side to actually play a match. The wait to reach the top ran longer still.

The top flight did not hold onto them. Selfoss finished 11th in 2010, were relegated, came back up, finished 11th again in 2012, and were relegated again. The decline continued: in 2025 they went down once more, this time out of 1. deild karla and into the third tier.

The women's side has fared better by comparison. In 2019 Selfoss beat KR in the final to win the Icelandic Cup, then added the Super Cup the following year. Eva Lind Elíasdóttir has made more than 150 appearances for the club, with goalkeeper Hrafnhildur Hauksdóttir and forward Hólmfríður Magnúsdóttir carrying that side through the run; Dagný Brynjarsdóttir later moved on to play for Portland Thorns in the NWSL.

On the men's side, Jón Daði Böðvarsson remains the name most attached to Selfoss, having gone on to play for Iceland at Euro 2016. In 2013 the club struck a partnership with Brentford, exchanging young players and coaching methods with the English side. Selfoss play in wine-red and white at the JÁVERK-völlurinn, a ground holding under 3,000, and the task now is straightforward: climb back out of the third tier.
