Haukar

Ásvellir holds a little over two thousand people, a modest ground on the edge of Hafnarfjörður that has rarely had reason to want more room than that. It has stayed the home ground through the club's near century, hosting a first team that has spent most of that time well below Iceland's top division.

Haukar took shape on 12 April 1931, and its name came from a priest, Friðrik Friðriksson, who pointed the new Hafnarfjörður club toward Valur in Reykjavík as a model. Haukar means Hawks, a word that has served as both the club's name and its nickname ever since. Red and white have been the colours from the start.

The men's team has reached Úrvalsdeild karla, the top flight, exactly once, in 2010, and finished second from bottom before going straight back down. By 2025 it was playing three tiers lower, in 2. deild karla. One result stands apart from that record: on 16 May 2012, Haukar beat Snæfell 31-0 in the Icelandic Cup, still the heaviest scoreline the competition has produced.

The women's side has carried the honours board instead, winning the 1. deild kvenna title five times, in 1985, 1996, 2009, 2016 and 2023. Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir passed through the club's academy before going on to win the Champions League with Lyon in 2020. She has since been named Iceland's Sportswoman of the Year twice.

Whatever the division, the club still plays out of the same corner of Hafnarfjörður, in front of a crowd that rarely needs more than the seats Ásvellir already has.
