Berane sits in the north of Montenegro, in the Lim valley, and for much of the last century its football club has been one of the few institutions the town points to outside its own borders. FK Berane traces back to 1920, though for long stretches of its history it played under the names Radnički Ivangrad and Ivangrad, following the town's own renaming.

The club came closest to a national title early on, finishing runner-up in the 1928 Montenegrin championship, then lost the final to Lovćen. Its steadier run of success came later and locally: republican league titles in 1951, 1982-83, 1996-97 and 2005-06, and a Montenegrin republican cup in 1983-84, all won before Montenegro had its own independent top flight. Since the country's football restructured, Berane's story has mostly played out in the lower divisions, with a Second League win in 2008-09 and two runner-up finishes there in 2010-11 and 2013-14.

The club's most recent achievement came last year, when Berane won the Third League North zone in 2024-25, a reminder that its recent decades have been about climbing back rather than defending old ground. Among the players who passed through, Dragoslav Jevrić went on to represent Serbia and Montenegro at international level, a rare case of a Berane name being known well beyond the Lim valley.

Home games are played at the Berane City Stadium, known locally as the stadium under Bogavsko Brdo. It opened in 1981 with room for 11,000 people; a 2018 reconstruction brought capacity down to 7,466. The club plays in blue and white, and its supporters call it Plavo-bijeli.

What Berane has kept through the name changes and the shifting divisions is the town itself, and a shirt colour that has not changed since 1920.
