Birmingham Legion Women
Club · United States · USL W League
The men's side at Birmingham Legion FC had already been playing at Protective Stadium since 2022 when, on 9 February 2023, the club and the United Soccer League announced a women's team to enter the USL W League that summer. The partners were not a rival club or a boardroom decision alone: Birmingham United Soccer Association and Alabama FC joined in to build the side around homegrown players rather than import a roster.
Birmingham Legion Women took the field for the first time in June 2023 under head coach Nathan Archard, with Janet Parks as his assistant. They wear the same black and gold as the men's team and play in front of a stadium built for 47,100, though the women's crest departs from the men's hammer-and-anvil mark in favour of three sparks. No nickname has attached itself to the side the way "Lady Electra" did to a men's shirt named after a local statue.
Three seasons in, the trophy cabinet is still empty.
