Kawasaki sits on the industrial belt between Tokyo and Yokohama, a city built around Toshiba's factories and shipping lines rather than around tourism or old money. For decades the basketball team wore the company's name outright, taking the court as the Toshiba Red Thunders from 1950 and later as Toshiba Brave Thunders, a works team in the fullest sense — its identity tied to a corporation rather than a neighbourhood. That changed in 2018, when ownership passed from Toshiba to DeNA and the club became simply Kawasaki Brave Thunders, finally carrying the city's name into the B.League.

The Thunders play at Todoroki Arena, a tight, 6,500-seat hall that gives the burgundy and gold end of the court little room to breathe. Across the prefecture sits Yokohama, and the meetings with the B-Corsairs are billed as the Kanagawa Derby, a fixture with the geography built in. The sharper edge in recent years, though, has run through Chiba: the Jets knocked Kawasaki out in the 2017–18 quarterfinals, and Kawasaki answered by beating them in successive Emperor's Cup finals, 76–60 in 2021 and 82–72 in 2022.

Those two Emperor's Cups sit alongside titles won under different names and different leagues — the old Japan Basketball League in 1999–2000, the JBL Super League five years later, and the National Basketball League in both 2013–14 and 2015–16 — a run that means the club has been champion of Japan under three separate competition structures. The one gap is a B.League crown itself: in 2016–17 Kawasaki reached the championship series and lost to the Tochigi Brex, a defeat they have not yet turned around.
