Bursa Büyükşehir Belediyespor did not build a handball team from scratch. In September 2022 the municipal sports club took over the licence and the squad of Mudanya Belediyespor, folding an established side into its own colours of navy blue, green and white.

Progress since has been fast rather than gradual. The team took the Turkish Women's Handball Cup in the 2024-2025 season, added the Turkish Super Cup months later, then went on to win the 50th Anniversary Federation Cup and the Women's Handball Super League title itself in 2025-2026. In Europe, the same campaign carried them to the semi-finals of the EHF European Cup. The league was decided on the final day, against Üsküdar Belediyespor, one of the two rivals — alongside Yalıkavak SK — that mark out where Bursa BB now stands in Turkish handball.

Behind that run sits Sevilay İmamoğlu Öcal, the goalkeeper named MVP of the 2026 final.
