Castlebar Celtic

Castlebar Celtic have carried through the Mayo Association Football League Super League since the club first topped it in 1954, with wins in 2023, 2024 and 2025. The Connacht Junior Cup has been claimed ten times, most recently in 2024.

The club grew out of a meeting in a room off Market Square in 1924, when it had no name and no fixed ground, playing early matches at Fairgreen and behind a bacon factory. Ireland was only beginning to settle after the Civil War, and Gaelic Athletic Association members who wanted to play football were barred from doing so under the association's Rule 27. The Castlebar Celtic name was not adopted until 1932, chosen in tribute to the Scottish club Celtic. By the 1940s the team had settled in the Marion, and in 1954 it bought Flannery's Field, which became Celtic Park; the ground staged its first match in 1958 and now holds 1,500.

Westport United has stood as the club's oldest rival, a fixture the local press has taken to calling the "Mayo El Clasico". Christy McHale gave the club its first taste of wider recognition, winning an Ireland cap in the early 1930s, while Tommy Ketterick and Hughie McGartland were among those who built the team in its early years.

When Castlebar Celtic marked its centenary in 2024, the club celebrated its history.
