Crusaders FC

Seaview sits close enough to Belfast Lough that a strong wind off the water has been known to decide a match, and its capacity of 3,383 keeps Crusaders a small-ground club by any measure, the kind of place where a goal can be heard from the street outside.

The club itself came together in 1898 at a house on North Queen Street, where a committee that included James McEldowney, John Hume and Thomas Wade settled on a name that Thomas Palmer had proposed, borrowed from medieval knights. For decades Crusaders played at amateur level, and only reached the senior Irish League in 1949, stepping into the vacancy left when Belfast Celtic withdrew from the competition.

What followed took time to build. The club's best-remembered goalscoring run belongs to Danny Hale, who scored 143 goals in four seasons in the 1960s, including 55 in the 1965/66 season alone — a mark that still stands as the club record. Roy Walker arrived as a player-coach in 1989 and stayed to guide Crusaders to league titles in 1995 and 1997, part of a trophy list that now runs to 7 league championships and 6 Irish Cups, the most recent of each coming in 2023.

None of that history changes the geography Crusaders play in. Belfast's other clubs are close by, and the fixture that matters most at Seaview is against Linfield, a meeting with the weight of the city behind it; the derby against Glentoran carries its own history too, but it is Linfield who bring the bigger crowd and the sharper edge.
