Bangor

Bangor no longer plays under the name that carried it for close to a century and a half. The company behind Bangor City F.C. was struck off the register in January 2025, and the shirt now belongs to Bangor City 1876 FC, a side supporters built from nothing after the original club collapsed under unpaid wages and a suspension from all football activity. What happens on the pitch in the city today happens under a name fans fought to keep, not one that simply carried on.

The club traced back to 18 December 1876, when it started out playing rugby before switching to football the following year, making it one of the oldest sides in Wales. It had a habit of being present at the founding of things: a member of the North Wales Coast League from 1893, a founder of the Northern Premier League in 1968 when it crossed into the English pyramid, and a founder of the Alliance Premier League in 1979. In 1984 it reached the FA Trophy final, the first Welsh club to do so since Cardiff City in 1927, and lost to Northwich Victoria in a replay. The club returned to Wales in 1992 as a founder member of the new Welsh Premier League.

Three league titles followed, along with eight Welsh Cups, the last of them in 2010. In 2012 the club moved from its old Farrar Road ground to Nantporth, where it played until 2022. Control passed to Vaughan Sports Management in 2016, and the discontent that followed led a group of supporters to set up an alternative side, Bangor 1876 FC, in 2019. The original club was suspended in November 2021 over unpaid salaries, withdrew from Cymru North in February 2022 with that season's results wiped out, and was formally wound up in January 2025.

By then the supporters' club had already staked its claim to the history: in November 2024 it voted to rename itself Bangor City 1876 FC, a legally separate side carrying the old identity forward from outside the professional pyramid it once helped to build.
