Bangor Capitalise on Red Card to Beat Portadown 3-1
Bangor secured their first victory of the Premiership season with a 3-1 win over Portadown in Saturday's Round 8 fixture. The hosts dominated proceedings after the visitors were reduced to ten men, and by then they had nothing to lose in terms of confidence. It was a result that keeps Bangor just ahead of bottom-half Portadown in the lower reaches of the table.
L. Harrison opened the scoring in the 17th minute, giving Bangor an early lead before the match changed direction. And here's the thing — the game turned on its head just twenty minutes later when L. MacKinnon received a red card for Portadown in the 37th minute. The visitors, already chasing the game, found no answer once they were playing the second half a man up.
Bangor extended their advantage with two quick goals after the interval. L. McRoberts made it 2-0 in the 55th minute, and I. Hughes sealed the victory with a third just two minutes later. Portadown pulled one back through S. O'Mahoney in the 76th minute, but the damage was already done. The hosts had the game won inside twenty minutes of the restart.
The statistics tell a story of dominance. Bangor registered 112 attacks to Portadown's 105, but possession favoured the hosts at 57 per cent. Shots on target were 6 to 1, and the visitors managed only a single corner compared to Bangor's six. Portadown were second to everything, and their red card meant they couldn't recover even when the numbers suggested otherwise.
Both sides sit in the relegation zone, though Bangor's first win gives them five points from eight games. Portadown remain winless with just one point, and this result means they stay at the bottom. We had given Portadown a 47 per cent chance of victory, but the match went the other way — and it was that red card that broke everything.
