The Northern Ireland Football League Premiership stands as the top tier of the national football structure. It traces its lineage to the Irish League, which was established in 1890, making it the second-oldest national league globally. While the current administrative body, the NIFL, took over operations in 2013, the competition has evolved through several name changes, including the Irish Premier League and the IFA Premiership, before adopting its present title.
The league features 12 clubs competing in a format designed to separate title contention from survival. Each team plays every other side three times during a 33-match regular season. Following this initial phase, the table splits. The top six clubs contest five additional matches to decide the champion and European qualification spots. The bottom six play five further games to avoid relegation. This structure ensures a 38-match total for every participant.
Access to the next level involves strict promotion and relegation rules. The club finishing 12th drops automatically to the NIFL Championship. Their place is filled by the Championship winner, provided they meet licensing requirements. The 11th-placed Premiership team faces a two-legged play-off against the winner of a Championship match-up between the second and third-placed sides.
European football is a key objective. The league champion enters the Champions League, while the runner-up qualifies for the Conference League. An additional Conference League spot goes to the Irish Cup winner. If the cup victor reaches Europe via the league, a play-off determines the final European berth among the third through seventh-placed teams. This distinguishes the league from the Irish Cup, a separate knockout tournament.
Linfield holds the record for most titles in the Premiership era with 10. Larne currently holds the crown following the 2025–26 campaign. The competition continues to operate under this framework after reducing from 16 to 12 clubs in 2008.
