In 2021 the American guard Mike James turned out for CSKA-2. He was there to fulfil contractual obligations while his status with the main CSKA Moscow squad was being resolved.

The 2025/26 squad is built around academy graduates such as Rafael Tashyev, Yegor Kolesnik and Kirill Grigory, under head coach Oleg Bartunov. In 2017 the organisation was restructured. The name CSKA-2 went to the senior squad in the professional leagues, and CSKA Junior stayed as the youth development side. CSKA-2 played its first Russian Super League-1 season, the second tier, in 2018/19. Home games are at the Palace of Sports Dynamo on Lavochkina Street, which holds 5,000, and the team has also used VEB Arena.

The best season so far was 2024/25. CSKA-2 reached the Super League final and lost to Temp-SUMZ. In 2025/26 they reached the Final Four, then lost the third-place match to Primorsky Akademiya and finished fourth. The team has won neither competition.

Its fiercest rival is Zenit-2 of Saint Petersburg, and the fixture is billed as the "Derby of the Two Capitals". It carries the old Moscow–Saint Petersburg rivalry into the second tier. Spartak-2, Temp-SUMZ and Dynamo Ufa are the other sides CSKA-2 meets most often.
