Tirana is a city that has always kept a second team in the shadow of its most famous club. Dinamo was set up in March 1950 by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in the early years of Albania's communist government. The connection showed even in the name: in 1995, trying to shed the association, the club briefly became Olimpik Tirana, before reverting to Dinamo Tirana in 1997. In August 2023 it changed identity again, becoming FC Dinamo City under a partnership with Manchester City.
None of the rebranding has touched what the club actually won. Eighteen league titles and fifteen Albanian Cups sit in its history. The forward line of that era carried the club's best-remembered player: Ilir Pernaska, who scored more than 150 goals between 1967 and 1981 and remains the club's all-time top scorer. The more recent silverware has come in bursts rather than streaks — the 2024/25 and 2025/26 cups, and a Super Cup in 2025 that followed earlier wins in 1989 and 2008.
