Damian Kulig's name still comes up whenever people in Tychy talk about the club's basketball side.
The club began life as KKS Big Star Tychy, took the name KKS Tychy in 2009, and settled on GKS Tychy the following year. Its full title, Górniczy Klub Sportowy, ties it to the mining industry that shaped the city. Promotion to the third tier in 1998/1999 and to the second in 2002/2003 built toward the top flight bid of 2006/2007, but bankruptcy in 2011 sent the club back down, and it had to win its way out of the second division again in 2011/2012 before returning to the I Liga in 2013/2014.
No Polish league title or national cup sits in the club's cabinet. Łukasz Diduszko took the I Liga Player of the Month award in November 2021 and added a bronze medal in European 3x3 basketball that same year.
