ŁKS Łódź

Łódź is a city with two clubs that share its name and little else, and the Derby of Łódź against Widzew is the fixture where the rivalry is fiercest. ŁKS, the side known as the Knights of Spring, wear white and red. Its basketball section began in 1929, twenty-one years after the parent club, and it grew mostly through the women's side.

Czesław Rembowski set up the women's team that year. It took nearly four decades to win a league title, in 1966–67. Then came a run: 1971–72, 1972–73 and 1973–74, three championships in consecutive seasons. Two more followed in the early 1980s, in 1981–82 and 1982–83, and the ninth arrived in 1996–97. The cup came five times, the last two in 1990–91 and 1991–92. In 1997–98 the team reached the semi-finals of the Ronchetti Cup, Europe's second-tier women's competition.

The men's story is shorter and older. ŁKS won the Polish title in 1952–53 and did not win it again. They played in the Korac Cup in 1978–79. Wiesław Jańczyk belongs to that world in an unusual way: he also won the football championship with ŁKS in 1958, so the club's two most celebrated codes shared him. Marcin Gortat came through the academy years later.
