A group of young men in Deventer wanted a name that pointed forward, so they called their new club Be Quick when they set it up on 2 December 1902. Three years later the name changed to Go Ahead, and it stuck for the next sixty-six years, until Eagles was added in 1971 and the club became GO Ahead Eagles.

The best of it came early. Between 1917 and 1933 the club took four Dutch championships, the last of them in 1933, and then spent the rest of the century as something other than a title contender. What survived from those years is a habit of turning up in other people's seasons: in 1971–72, Ajax lost once in the league, and it was to Go Ahead, 3–2.

The gap between the fourth championship and the next major trophy ran to 92 years. In April 2025 the club beat AZ Alkmaar on penalties to win the KNVB Cup, having lost the only previous final it reached, 0–1 to Feyenoord in 1965. The Johan Cruyff Shield that followed went the other way.

Home is De Adelaarshorst on Vetkampstraat, built in 1920 and holding 10,400 — small enough that the ground gives the club one of its nicknames rather than the other way round. The name translates as the eagle's nest, which arrived at the stadium decades before the birds arrived in the club's title. Deventer sits on the IJssel in Overijssel, in the east of the country, and the river runs through the other nicknames too: Trots aan de IJssel, pride of the IJssel; Trots van het Oosten, pride of the East. The oldest of them, Kowet, is simply what the Dutch tongue did to the English words the founders chose.

Red and yellow are the club colours, red on the shirt at home. The words on the badge, though, are still the ones picked out in 1905 by a club that had already decided being quick was not the point.
