Three weeks after Goa's new football club registered as one of the founding members of India's Super League, its ownership list gained an unlikely name: Virat Kohli, a widely known Indian cricketer, bought a stake in FC Goa on 23 September 2014.

FC Goa itself had been founded on 26 August 2014, by Venugopal Dhoot, Dattaraj Salgaocar and Shrinivas Dempo. The ownership changed shape less than two years later: Jaydev Mody bought a 65% stake in August 2016, and Salgaocar and Dempo left the club they had helped start. Zico took the manager's job for the club's first two seasons.

Home is the Fatorda Stadium in Margao, officially the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, with room for 19,000. Blue and orange make up the colours, picked for the coast and the rising sun, and the nickname "The Gaurs" comes from the animal that represents the state.

An ISL title itself has stayed out of reach — FC Goa lost the final in 2015 to Chennaiyin and again in 2018–19 to Bengaluru — though they topped the regular season in 2019–20 to take the League Winners Shield. The AIFF Super Cup has gone their way three times, in 2019, 2025 and 2025–26, and the Durand Cup followed in 2021.
