Masashi Obuchi has worn the shirt through every version of this club, from its earliest incarnation in Chiba to the arena in Ōta where it plays now. Few players in Japanese basketball can say that; the roster around him has been rebuilt more than once, but he and Masaya Komaki stayed through it.

What became the Gunma Crane Thunders started life as the Chiba Jets, incorporated in 2010 and launched into the BJ League for the 2012–13 season. The move to Gunma Prefecture came in 2016, and the new name was built from two ideas: the crane, a nod to the shape of the prefecture itself, and thunder. Black, yellow and red became the club's colours, and Open House, a real estate company, has owned it since.

Under president Masaaki Arai, the club has also built out a pathway for younger players through its Sanders Growth programme.
