Latvijas Universitate

Students at the University of Latvia put a basketball team together in 1929, gathering under the banner of "Universitātes Sports" with the university's backing behind them. Within a decade the side had turned that arrangement into results: five Latvian championships across the 1930s, in 1930, 1934, 1935, 1936 and 1937, built partly around players such as Rūdolfs Jurciņš, the team captain, and teammates who doubled up for the Latvian national side that won the first FIBA European Championship in 1935. The Soviet occupation in 1940 ended the club outright, though a university team kept playing under the LVU Rīga name through the occupation years and added Latvian SSR titles in 1950, 1952, 1989 and 1990.

The current club has no direct line back to either version. It was re-established in 2010 and returned to the Latvian Basketball League that same season, playing out of the Rimi Olimpiskais centrs in Riga, a hall that seats 830 for basketball. Blue and white remain the colours carried over from the original side.

Games against VEF Rīga are billed as the Riga derby, the one fixture on the calendar with any real edge to it. Among the modern generation, Edvards Mežulis and Alberts Putāns are the names most associated with the rebuilt club. Marts Ozolinkēvičs took over as head coach in early 2025, succeeding Gunārs Gailītis.

What the post-2010 side has not managed is a league title of its own. Fourth place, reached in 2011–12 and again in 2021–22, is as close as it has come, and the Latvian Basketball Cup — won by the pre-war club's Soviet-era successor but not since — has stayed out of reach in both its old and revived formats.
