Renārs Birkāns spent his final three seasons running the offence from the point, and by 2022–23 he was doing it as captain, finishing that campaign as the team's assist leader. It was the best season the club had produced in over a decade: a bronze medal in the Latvian Basketball League and a run to the Latvian Cup final, both under coach Artūrs Visockis-Rubenis, who had taken charge in 2020 and stayed at the helm through 2026.

The club itself dates only to May 2018, registered as Sporta Klubs Liepājas Basketbols after the city's previous professional side folded. What it carried forward was not a roster but a place in the standings and a lineage stretching back through Liepājas Lauvas and Liepājas Metalurgs to Sarkanais Metalurgs, the Red Metallurg side that won the Latvian SSR Championship in 1963. Under various names the club has taken a Latvian league silver, in 1996–97, and four bronze medals since, the most recent alongside that 2023 cup run. A league title has eluded it throughout.

Liepāja plays out of the Liepāja Olympic Centre, home to 2,540 on a full night, and wears dark blue, white and red. Its games against VEF Rīga and Rīgas Zeļļi have carried the heaviest stakes in recent seasons, decided in playoff series and cup finals rather than league placings alone.

Among the players who passed through, Jānis Timma spent the 2011–12 season here before a career that took him well beyond Latvia, and Mārtiņš Meiers wore the captaincy for long enough to be remembered as the man who held the dressing room together through the club's leaner years.
