In 2018, a bankruptcy in Valmiera's top flight left a gap that a university team filled almost overnight. Valmiera/Ordo had gone under, and the club that had been grinding through the third division since 2011 as the basketball side of Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences was handed its place in the Latvian Basketball League and the Latvian-Estonian Basketball League. The students kept the city's name in the top tier and, in time, made it their own.

The team still carries the university in its nickname, ViA, short for Vidzeme Augstskola, and traces back to 2009, when it was nothing more than a student side. Black, green and white have stayed its colours since.

Dainis Bertāns is the name attached to that rise. His number hangs retired at the Valmiera Olympic Center, and his sons, Dāvis and Dairis, both went on to play professionally before returning to run the club from the front office, a family line the academy now trades on under the Bertāns name.

BK Ventspils has become the measure of where Valmiera stands. The two met in the 2025–26 finals of both the league and the national cup, and Valmiera won both: 3–1 in the league, 84–70 in the cup, before adding the Latvian-Estonian League title to complete a clean sweep of every competition it entered that season. Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones was named finals MVP in the league and the cross-border league alike; Dominykas Stenionis took the cup final honour.

A club that spent its first years in the third division now has to defend a treble.
