Malaysia went into the 2025 Southeast Asian Games as reigning champions of the 50-over format and came out having added the T20 gold as well. The 2017 50-over title was the country's first major regional honour; the 2023 Games brought silver in both formats, so the 2025 T20 win closed that gap.

The rivalry that matters most is with Singapore, contested through the Saudara Cup in T20 internationals and the Stan Nagaiah Trophy in one-day cricket.

Suresh Navaratnam holds the team's appearance record along with the most runs and wickets. Virandeep Singh captained the side at 20.

Those structures run through the Malaysian Cricket Association's National Cricket Centre at Bayuemas Oval, the 3,000-capacity ground in Pandamaran that took over as the team's home after the Kinrara Academy Oval in Puchong closed in 2022. Suhan Alagaratnam and Syed Aziz came up through that academy pipeline, the latter now among the side's leading run-scorers in T20 cricket.

The closest Malaysia came to a global title was the 1998 ACC Trophy final, lost to Bangladesh; semi-final finishes followed in 2000 and 2002. For the 2025/2026 season the Malaysian Cricket Association brought in Dav Whatmore as Director of Cricket and Senior Men's Head Coach, with Bilal Asad taking the men's team day to day.
