Matonense have spent recent seasons in the lower divisions of the Campeonato Paulista. The professional side traces to 24 May 1976, though a club of the same name existed in Matão before that. What followed was a run through the state pyramid: Série A2 in 1997, Série A3 in 1996, and Série A4 twice, in 1995 and 2013.

The nickname Águia Azul, the Blue Eagle, comes from the bird on the crest, and the club still goes by the older shorthand SEMA as well. Home kit is blue throughout, shirt, shorts and socks, with white reserved for away games.

The fixture that supporters still bring up is the 1996 meeting with Noroeste, of Bauru, in that year's Série A3, which pulled around 24,000 into the Prudentão. The two sides met again in 2023. Matonense also draw regular, if lower-key, opposition from Itapirense and Francana in the state's junior divisions.

Home games are played at the Estádio Municipal Doutor Hudson Buck Ferreira, known locally as Ferreirão or Ninho da Águia — the Eagle's Nest, a name that lines up with the crest and the nickname alike. It holds 12,010.
