The 1973 season took Independente out of the amateur circuit it had dominated through the 1960s and into the state's professional structure. The Campeonato Paulista Segunda Divisão title that year was the club's first honour of real weight.

What followed was slower. The second state title came in 1999, in the Série B1, and the third in 2011 — the same year the club also took the Série B. Between those two B1 wins sat the Copa Energil C of 2007.

The name on the crest goes back to 1944, when the side was put together in the Vila Esteves district of Limeira. That address stuck to the club harder than any silverware — supporters still call it the Galo da Vila Esteves, the rooster from the Vila, and the shorter Galo de Limeira travels with it. The black and white of the shirt gives the third version, Galo Alvinegro.

Limeira, a city in the interior of São Paulo state, carries two clubs, and the meeting between Independente and Internacional de Limeira is the Dérbi de Limeira. It is the fixture that fills the ground.

That ground is the Estádio Comendador Agostinho Prada, known around the city as the Pradão — the big Prada, though it holds 9,483. It sits in the same district the club came from, which is the whole point of the nickname: the rooster never moved out of the Vila.
